KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Washburn beat Truman State University 27-21 in football Saturday at Stokes Stadium.
Truman State's Adam Hall caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Truman State's Dylan Hair in the first quarter, and Truman State's Diego Perez kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Washburn's Cam Robinson scored on a 16-yard run in the second quarter, and Washburn's Aidan Battle kicked the extra point. Washburn's Dwayne Moorehead caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Washburn's Logan Madden, and Washburn's Battle kicked that extra point. Washburn's Battle added a 24-yard field goal late in the half, making it 17-7.
Washburn's Tre Calhoun caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Washburn's Madden in the third quarter. Truman State's Nathan Ryan fumbled, and Washburn's Cortlin Dalton recovered. Washburn's Battle kicked a 34-yard field goal early in the fourth, making it 27-7.
Truman State's Vance Herring caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Truman State's Hair on fourth-and-11, and Truman State's Perez kicked the extra point.
Washburn turned the ball over on downs at the Truman State 18. Truman State challenged a run by Truman State's Hair near the goal line, and the ruling was overturned. Truman State's Ryan caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Truman State's Hair with 1:40 left. Truman State's Perez kicked that extra point.
Washburn's Madden completed 28 of 38 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns. Truman State's Hair completed 22 of 29 for 307 yards and three touchdowns. Neither threw an interception.
Washburn's Quinton Renfro ran 10 times for 54 yards. Washburn's Robinson ran 10 times for 44 yards and a touchdown. Truman State's Madden Irving ran 10 times for 49 yards.
Washburn's Calhoun caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Truman State's Jackson Overton caught six for 68 yards. Truman State's Ryan caught seven for 53 yards and a touchdown.
Washburn's Brody Hayes had 10 tackles. Washburn's J.C. Heim had eight tackles and a sack. Truman State's Connor Beerman and Truman State's Jack Weltha had eight tackles each.
Washburn had 446 yards. Truman State had 385 and lost two of three fumbles.
Washburn is 1-0. Truman State is 0-1.
