Upper Iowa edges Truman State 21-19 in football

Truman State University lost 21-19 to Upper Iowa in football Saturday at Harms-Eischeid Stadium in Fayette, Iowa, after a late touchdown pass pulled the Bulldogs within two points and the two-point try failed.

Truman State outgained Upper Iowa 324 yards to 175 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference game, Upper Iowa's homecoming, but threw three interceptions and lost a fumble that Upper Iowa returned for a touchdown.

Madden Irving, of Truman State, scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter, and Diego Perez, of Truman State, kicked a 38-yard field goal early in the second for a 10-0 lead.

Upper Iowa scored twice in 57 seconds. Jayden Gordon, of Upper Iowa, ran 7 yards for a touchdown, and on Truman State's next possession Irving fumbled at the end of a 2-yard run. Brycen Hendrix, of Upper Iowa, recovered and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown and a 14-10 lead.

Perez kicked a 43-yard field goal with 2:03 left in the half to make it 14-13. Gordon's 2-yard run in the third quarter put Upper Iowa ahead 21-13.

Dylan Hair, of Truman State, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Luke Allen, of Truman State, with 4:36 left. Hair's two-point pass failed. Truman State got the ball back with 1:56 left, but Jalen Hodo, of Upper Iowa, intercepted Hair on the second play of the drive.

Hair completed 18 of 30 passes for 228 yards. Irving ran for 43 yards on 12 carries and led Truman State with three catches for 53 yards.

Jack Weltha, of Truman State, had 12 tackles. Alex Medina, of Truman State, had seven tackles, including two for losses.

Gordon ran for 56 yards and two touchdowns for Upper Iowa. Zamar Wise, of Upper Iowa, completed 11 of 19 passes for 82 yards.

Truman State is 2-4 and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Upper Iowa is 3-3 and 2-1.

Truman State plays at Quincy at 2 p.m. Oct. 17.
