A Kirksville man faces a class D felony after Macon County prosecutors say he sold a borrowed 2013 Polaris Ranger to a buyer in Iowa for $2,000 without the owner’s permission.
Fred K. Craig, 1718 S. Baltimore St., Kirksville, was charged Tuesday with tampering with a motor vehicle in the first degree. The complaint was filed by Macon County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Meisner and is assigned case number 26MA-CR00138 in Macon County Circuit Court.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Macon Police Officer Caleb Brown, the owner had given Craig temporary permission to operate the side-by-side. When she asked for it back, Craig did not return it. Investigators later determined the vehicle had been sold to an individual in Iowa.
The alleged offense occurred on or about April 13, 2026.
The court has set bond at $10,000, cash only.
A class D felony in Missouri carries a sentence of one to seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, up to a year in county jail, or a fine of up to $10,000 — or both prison and a fine. If a defendant is found to have profited from the crime, the fine may be doubled to match the gain.
Craig has not yet entered a plea. A criminal charge is an accusation; a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
